Blue Galaxy Nail Art - LNTC

Hey y'all!

Today the Llama ladies were challenged to produce a look that has been done so incredibly well by so many nail artists, so it was kind of hard to find a way to make it just a little bit different.  I'm talking about galaxy nails, of course, which is a relatively simple technique that just requires a bit of time but very little precision.  I opted to go with a blue galaxy, because... reasons.

The unfortunate truth about most galaxy nails is that they usually require quite a few polishes.  In my case, this ended up being 8, including the two glitter polishes.

L-R, front row: Pure Ice Superstar!, Sinful Colors Hottie, Octopus Party Star Tar
In addition to these, the only other tool I needed was a makeup sponge. In the past, though, I've done them with nothing more than a cotton swab, which works just as well!

I started with a single coat of Incognito in Sausalito, a deep dark blue.  After that, it was a process of sponging on small patches of each of the other colors using the edges of the makeup sponge (to make it more precise).  There's a bit of technique involved with this, in that it helps to be able to push the colors in a swirly pattern, but really it's open to whatever you feel like doing.  I applied in the following order:  Skinny Jeans, Endless Blue, Cornflower Gleam, Hottie, Too Cool To Tango, Superstar!, and Star Tar.

About halfway through my colors, I applied one thin coat of Hottie, a blue glitter.  I did this because I knew that I would be using Star Tar over the top when I was done, and I wanted to add a bit of dimension underneath that.  The effect is subtle, but I think it definitely helped.

They key to this look is layering the polishes so they merge but don't completely cover one another.  You want to be able to see that your galaxies have a lot of stuff going on inside, just like the whole wide wonder of the universe!  After I was satisfied with my layers, I carefully dabbed/stroked on Star Tar, which is an incredible indie glitter polish that, as the name might imply, is perfect for starry scenes.

Afterthoughts?  Not the most trailblazing of galaxies, I know, but I still think it's really hard to actually mess this technique up.  If you've done one, I'd love to see it!

Otherwise, please do check out the other galaxy looks from the Llama ladies below, and I'll see ya next time!

  2. Wow these look amazing. After watching an episode of Doctor Who yesterday and Gravity the day before... let's just say the idea of galaxy is very appealing at the moment. I must try these out.

  5. Wooow! I never would have thought to use Hottie for the stars! I generally use random holo glitter nail polishes XD But I like your approach better, It's far more original and looks way better in pictures. I'm gonna try it next time I make these!
    Kisses from Argentina!

    1. Thank you! Hottie works for stars but only as a background glitter. It adds depth but can't be the spotlight because it isn't reflective enough, I think.
